What is the Gospel?

The Gospel (The “Good News” of Salvation)
How Can a Sinner be Reconciled to God?

WATCH THIS 12 MINUTE PRESENTATION OF THE GOSPEL BY PAUL WASHER:

Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but by Me.” (John 14:6)

When God created the world He made everything very good (Genesis 1-2). The crown of His creation was man (Adam & Eve). When God created man, He made man without sin and in His own image (Genesis 1:26-28). This does not mean that we look like God, because God is spirit, rather this means simply that we are moral and ethical beings made to know and relate to God in fellowship. There was perfect, loving fellowship between God and man.

God told Adam that if he sinned, he would die. One day, however, Adam disobeyed and sinned against God. The result of that sin was broken fellowship with God, guilt, physical death, and for those who die without being reconciled to God and without their sins being forgiven, there awaits certain judgment and hell.

The Bible tells us that we are all sinners (Romans 3:23), both because we have inherited the guilt of Adam’s sin (1 Corinthians 15:22) and because we all sin, and nothing we do can save us from our sin. So, what are we to do? Well, let’s look more closely at what the Bible has to say about sin, the consequences of sin and how we can be saved from our sin and be reconciled to God.

I. What is Sin?

(1) It is a violation of God and His Law. It is high treason against the Lord. We are guilty criminals before the Judge of the Universe. It is to miss the mark of God’s perfect standard. It is to transgress His will and law. It is to do what is unrighteous, to fail to do/say/think what is right or to do/say/think what is not right.

1 John 3:4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 2:27 You are a sinner if you are “…a transgressor of the Law…”

1 John 3:4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. (NIV)

1 John 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin…

James 4:17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Romans 7:12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. 13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. (ESV)

Matthew 25:41-46 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44 “Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ 45 “Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 “These will go away into eternal punishment,
(2) It is the disobedience of the heart.

Matthew 5:21-23 “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER ‘ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’ 22 “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

Matthew 5:27-28 “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

II. The Universal Sinfulness of Man

Everyone is a sinner, there are no exceptions.

Genesis 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Jeremiah 2:35 Yet you said, ‘I am innocent; Surely His anger is turned away from me.’ Behold, I will enter into judgment with you Because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’

Jeremiah 17:9 ” The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Romans 3:10-18 as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; 11 THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; 12 ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.” 13 “THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING,” “THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS”; 14 “WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS”; 15 “THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, 16 DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, 17 AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.” 18 “THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Ephesians 2:1-3 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

III. What is the Penalty Due Our Sin?

(1) Death

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-

Romans 7:5 For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.

Romans 8:13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die;

James 1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

(2) Judgment

Hebrews 9:27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,

2 Timothy 4:1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:
Jude 1:14-15 … “Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

John 3:18 “…he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
(3) Eternal Conscious Torment in Hell

Matthew 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels”

Luke 12:5 “But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!

Matthew 13:41-42 “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 “when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.”

Revelation 21:8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Matthew 3:12 “His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

2 Thessalonians 1:9 And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power

Revelation 14:11 “And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night,

Daniel 12:2 “And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.”

Matthew 25:46 “And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

IV. No Amount of Personal Good Works and Religious Zeal Can Save Us from Sin, Death, Judgment and Hell

Romans 3:20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Romans 3:28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

Galatians 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Romans 3:10-12 as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one; 11 There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; 12 All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.”
But there is Good News!

V. What We Cannot Do, God Has Done through His Son – The Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ died upon the cross to pay the sin debt of all who would ever savingly believe – in full! We are called, therefore, to call upon the name of the Lord for salvation, to trust in His death for sin as our only hope for salvation. We are to confess Him as Lord and believe that God has raised Him from the dead.

Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”

Romans 11:6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace

Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Colossians 2:13-14 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Philippians 3:8-9 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, 9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,

VI. Therefore, it is by Faith in the Person and Work of Jesus Christ – and NOT our Works! This is the Gospel call! Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved!

Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,

Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Romans 1:17 …The just shall live by faith.

Romans 3:28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Romans 10:9-10, 13 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation…13 for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.”

2 Corinthians 5:20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Colossians 2:13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
(8) We receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 1:13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation– having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,

Galatians 3:14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Romans 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
(9) We have the certain hope of resurrection

Colossians 2:3 [Christ…] in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
(12) Every other heavenly blessing is ours in Christ

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
(13) The fruit of the Holy Spirit

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
(14) The ability to truly love God and the church
1 John 4:19 We love, because He first loved us.

1 John 4:21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

VIII. What Happens if We Refuse the Gospel?

Hebrews 10:26-27 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES.
IX. We Obey and We are Sanctified FOLLOWING Our Conversion – This is the Fruit of Our Salvation and NOT the Cause of Our Salvation

John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

X. Fellowship with the Church

If you have trusted in Christ alone for your salvation, it is critical that you enter into faithful fellowship with a local, biblical church.

Hebrews 10:24-25 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

XI. Means of Growth in Christ

• Listen to the regular, faithful preaching of the Bible.
• Pray and in the prayer, worship God, confess your sins, give Him thanks and make your requests.
• Read and study the Bible.
• Fellowship with the local church.
• Worship the Lord!
